I have researched into some different record labels to help me produce my own record label to go along with my research and planning before we produce our music video. Although I have research into depth about different record labels such as the 'Big Four' companies this isn't necessarily going to help me produce a record label but it is good to have the information in the back of my mind. I can see most of the labels take quite a simple approach when it comes to design and this is something I will take into consideration when producing my own record label.

Progress So Far

We have been filming for the last couple of media lessons to get our performance and narrative shots complete. We started with a plan of the shots and locations of what we were going to film to try and get as much footage done as possible. We set up our media classroom with exam tables and different coloured chairs to make the scene look like more of a younger classroom environment, as the story line for the video

We focused on the performance shots within the classroom where Jessie J is seen singing on her own.
We then went on to look at some of the narrative shots which we filmed in the corridors inside of the school, which made it easier for our group to film as our location was inside of school. We made a rough story board which were able to follow during filming so we knew what shots we had to film.

All of these shots have been uploaded onto the editing machines so that we could sync our song with the shots that we had. We still have a few narrative shots that we need to film but these are much more complex and are going to include more props than what we have been used to using in the shots that we have already filmed.

I have emailed the company that owns the song to assure it is ok to use the song that we are intending to use for our music video and to let them know that it is for educational purposes only.

Roles and Responsibilities

There are three of us within our group that are going to share the roles that we will need to take on board when it comes to producing our music video. We haven't assigned specific roles for each of us because olivia is going to be our main singer although each us are going to feature within the music video we will each have to take the role of filming at some point during the music video.

When we were filming one scene where we had lots of people involved Olivia took the role of director and filming, our teacher advised us on different shots that he thought would look good so we took that into consideration and adapted the shots to how we thought would look good within our music video.

All of the other shots that we included within our music video we each took it in turns to film and direct. All of the main shots of Olivia were filmed by myself and then the other shots of Romy were filmed by both me and Olivia.

Researching Costumes

I have had a look a little bit further into some  of the outfits Jessie J wears within some of her music videos. She is known to wear a wide variation of costumes which gives her the unique personality that she has. She is known to wear clothes with bright colours and different prints mainly that contrast with each other when worn. Therefore this is something we would love to include within our music video.

In our music video we are going to try and keep the same sort of unique clothing but also things that are in fashion and easy to get hold of. Rather than just having a simple, plain outfit we have decided to follow the style of Jessie J and use something similar within our own music video.

Location Research

After deciding that we are going to do Jessie J's music video of 'Who's Laughing Now' we have had to analyse the music video so that we could think of locations as to where we are going to film our own music video.

In Jessie J's music video the main location which it is set is inside of a school, where a lot of the narative shots take place.

We have taken some location shots ourself to show different locations in which we are going to be filming our music video. These photos will also give a rough idea of where the performer will be stood in each location.

Rough Storyboard

We all sat down to create one rough storyboard within our group for when were going to start filming our performance and narrative shots for our music video. Each part of the story board included positioning, including angles and how far or close the camera was going to be in the shot, what props were going to be in the shot and the positioning of the camera relating with the person.

We produced two separate storyboards, one focussing on our performance shots and the other one focussing on the narrative part of our music video.

I found by creating a storyboard it will really help us when we come to filming our music video because we will have a clear idea of the different shots that need to be filmed.

Rough Plan Of Shots

Me and my group have sat down to create a rough shot list for our music video and created a simple storyboard that was going to help us when it came to filming our music video. We have looked at the different shots for both performance ad narative. We have looked at different shot types including different angles that we are hoping to include within our music video.

People Involved In Music Video

We have decided that Olivia and Romy who are both in the group that I am working with will take the main role of Jessie J within our music video. In the video we see a mini Jessie J and Jessie J herself. We are going to film all of the performance shots with Olivia as Jessie J singing in the classroom location and Romy will play the younger Jessie in the narrative shots and few performance shots where we see her singing.
We have asked people within our media class to sit in the narrative shot in the classroom where we see mini Jessie surrounded by other pupils within the classroom. The other shots where we see other people apart from Jessie J appearing in it for example, the three girls in the corridor, we have also asked people already in our class to be in these shots.

Discussions and Ideas Within Our Group.

Discussions and ideas within our group.

After coming to the decision that we were going to created a video for Jessie J's 'Whos Laughing Now' we knew that this would be simple enough to be able to recreate this video within our school to the highest standard that we were able to achieve. The video that we are going to create will portray our genre of Pop very well.

The main locations we were going to need to film in were the school; including classrooms, corridors, canteen, hall, hardcourts and surrouding outside locations on the school grounds.
The Classroom would be where all of our performance shots were going to take place. The other locations were going to be for all ofr the narrative shots, as we found the narrative for this music video was filmed in a school.

After thinking about this we decided that 2 members of the group were going to be involved in the music video, Romy and Olivia. This has meant that we have started to assign ourselves to different roles and with there being three of us within the group we can each have a go at everything for ourselves.

Lyrics- Jessie J 'Whos Laughing Now'

Mummy they call me names
They wouldn't let me play
I'd run home, sit and cry almost everyday
'Hey Jessica, you look like an alien
With green skin you don't fit in this playpen'
Well they pull my hair
They took away my chair
I keep it in and pretend that I didn't care
'Hey Jessica, you're so funny
You've got teeth just like Bugs bunny'

Oh, so you think you know me now
Have you forgotten how
You would make me feel
When you drag my spirit down
But thank you for the pain
It made me raise my game
And I'm still rising, I'm still rising
Yeah

So make your jokes
Go for broke
Blow your smoke
You're not alone
But who's laughing now
But who's laughing now
So raise the bar
Hit me hard
Play your cards
Be a star
But who's laughing now
But who's laughing now

Cos I'm in L.A
You think I've made my fame
If it makes us friends
When you only really know my name
'Oh Jessie, we knew you could make it
I've got a track and I'd love you to take it'
So now because I'm signed
You think my pockets lined
4 years now and I'm still waiting in the line
'Oh Jessie, I saw you on youtube
I tagged old photos from when we was at school'

Oh, so you think you know me now
Have you forgotten how
You would make me feel
When you drag my spirit down
But thank you for the pain
It made me raise my game
And I'm still rising, I'm still rising
Yeah

So make your jokes
Go for broke
Blow your smoke
You're not alone
But who's laughing now
But who's laughing now
So raise the bar
Hit me hard
Play your cards
Be a star
But who's laughing now
But who's laughing now

Jessie
She broke out of the box
Swallowed your pride
You got that ego cough
Let the haters hate
You're like way too late
See I got a message from you
'Hola, I'm proud of you'
'Oh my god babe your voice is like wow!'
My reply: Who's laughing now

Oh, so you think you know me now
Have you forgotten how
You would make me feel
When you drag my spirit down
But thank you for the pain
It made me raise my game
And I'm still rising, I'm still rising
Yeah

So make your jokes
Go for broke
Blow your smoke
You're not alone
But who's laughing now
But who's laughing now
So raise the bar
Hit me hard
Play your cards
Be a star
But who's laughing now
But who's laughing now

So make your jokes
Go for broke
Blow your smoke
You're not alone
But who's laughing now
But who's laughing now
So raise the bar
Hit me hard
Play your cards
Be a star
But who's laughing now

Genre Summary

Pop music is also know as 'popular music' and is aimed at a younger market. Music that is composed is usually short simple songs, where new variations of song are created from existing music that has already been composed.

As we have chosen to create a pop music video I have researched into a few music videos that have been produced for this genre and i have seen some very similar similarities. Many narrative shots are used within pop music video to make sure they are targeting the correct audience.

We have chosen to recreate Jessie J's music video for 'Who's Laughing Now'-

I chose this video as one of the videos that I was going to analyse during the research stage. I found that this meets its target audience and is directly aimed at them as the video is set in a school. Simple shots are used, for example all of Jessie's performance shots are in the same location. The narrative shots are a little more complicated but are shown well to keep the consistency of targeting their audience that they are aiming to target the video at.

Another Music video I chose to look at was Taylor Swift- You Belong With Me-

The whole video is made up of narative shots and presents a story all the way through about a girl falling in love with a boy. It is made up of many complicated shots and as I watched the video through a couple of times I decided that this was not really going to help me with my research because there were no performance shots to analyse. So I went on to look at Taylor Swift- Love Story

Which I found had both interesting performance and narative shots. The storyline behind this video was the same sort of story that 'You Belong With Me' was trying to present, so in that respect, both the narative shots in both of the Taylor Swift videos were similar.

Having both performance shots and narative within a music video is typical pop video that we would expect to see to fit in with the pop genre. Showing consistency throughout the video to keep up a storyline for people to watch, appeals massivly to the 'pop genre' target audience.

Initial Idea

We have decided to create a music video for Jessie J's song 'Who's Laughing Now'
After looking at her music video -http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KsxSxF3JKeU- We have decided to follow the same sort of idea as it has done in the music video so that it will be a lot easier for the group to be in the school environment and not have to travel every time there is filming that needs to be done.

By already being in our location the only other things we need to think about properly are our props, which  are most likely to be accessible to us in school already.

Having looked more into depth at the lyrics of the song has helped us focus more on the narrative of the song as in the original music video, very little performance shots are used. We want to be able to create a music video that has the correct balance between both performance and narrative shots.

http://www.metrolyrics.com/whoas-laughing-now-lyrics-jessie-j.html

We do not have a final idea of exact shots for performance shots and narrative shots and where each exact location is going to be, but after further research into genre and location we will have a much clearer idea of what we want to achieve within our music video.

What Do You Think Your Best Skills Are?

I think my best skills are working with photoshop as for my AS project I created  A magazine front cover, contents page and double page spread. As this was an individual task I didnt get much experience working within a group of people although my skills working within in a team are still ok as I have this experience from working within a group in my year 11 media project.

What skills do you need to further develop?

I feel that I need to develop my video editing skills within my final year of sixth form as the I have only had very slight experience having a go at some different roles within creating a music video, back when I was in year 11. As for my A2 project I am creating a music video I feel that my skills need to be worked on to create the highest standard of product possible.
